Hemlock – Kathleen Peacock (2012)

Mac (Mackenzie), Amy, Jason, and Kyle were best friends.

The four of them went every where, and did everything together.

Until the night that Mac bailed, Kyle didn’t pick up, and Jason was running late.

The night that Amy was killed.

Werewolves are real.

The government admitted to their existence a few years ago, and the solution to citizens with LS (Lupine Syndrome) is internment camps.

Stripped of their rights, citizens with LS lose their property, their families, and sent to rehabilitation centres that do not rehabilitate.

There is no cure.

Senator Walsh, Amy’s bereaved grandfather has started a political vendetta against all LS sufferers inviting the Trackers, vicious men and women who track, torture, and capture people with LS, LS sympathizers, and anyone who gets in their way.

Interesting enough but this book is crazy formulaic: love triangles, dangerous mysteries that cannot possibly be shared with adults, the double-blind, and the last page where you realize that this is actually the first in at least a trilogy.

Dear god help us.

That being said, it was refreshing to have the “secret” werewolves, not be secret. Everyone knows they exist, the question is who might be one.
